How to tune a ukulele with the tuner

- Step 2Pluck one open stringLet it ring. Auto finds the string for you, or tap G, C, E or A to lock the tuner to that string.
- Step 3Turn the peg until the needle is greenLeft of center is flat, so tighten the string. Right of center is sharp, so loosen it. When all four lamps are lit, your ukulele is in tune.

Standard ukulele tuning: G C E A
Standard ukulele tuning is G C E A, from string 4 to string 1. String 4 is the one nearest your face when you hold the uke. The G is tuned higher than the C next to it, so the strings do not go from low to high. This is called a re-entrant tuning, and it gives the ukulele its bright, close chords. The table shows both versions at A4 = 440 Hz.
| String | High G | Frequency | Low G | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | G4 | 392.00 Hz | G3 | 196.00 Hz |
| 3 | C4 | 261.63 Hz | C4 | 261.63 Hz |
| 2 | E4 | 329.63 Hz | E4 | 329.63 Hz |
| 1 | A4 | 440.00 Hz | A4 | 440.00 Hz |
High G or low G
Most ukuleles use high G (G4, 392.00 Hz). Low G tunes string 4 one octave down, to G3 (196.00 Hz), for a fuller bass. It needs a thicker, often wound, string. If you do not know which you have, look at string 4: if it is thinner than string 3, it is high G.
Choose Low G under Settings. The tuner keeps your choice in this browser, apart from the guitar tuner's settings. In Auto, it finds the right string in either tuning.
Soprano, concert, tenor and baritone
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles all use the same G C E A tuning, so this tuner works for all three. Tenors are the size most often strung with low G. The baritone ukulele is different: it is tuned D G B E, like the four highest strings of a guitar. This tuner has no baritone setting. Use the guitar tuner and tap strings 4 to 1 to tune to D, G, B and E.
Tune by ear, or with the tuner
To tune by ear, tap Play the note. The tuner plays a short plucked tone of the string and stops listening while it plays. Pluck your string, compare, and turn the peg until the two sound the same. You can also tune the strings to each other: tune A first, then fret the E string at fret 5 and match it to the open A. Then fret C at fret 4 to match E, and G at fret 2 to match A.
By ear is a good skill, but the needle is faster and more exact, more so in a loud room.
Why new ukulele strings go flat
New nylon and fluorocarbon strings stretch much more than steel guitar strings, so a new uke goes flat again and again for the first days. This is normal. Tune each string, pull it gently up from the fretboard along its length, and tune again. Do this two or three times per string.
Always finish by tuning up to the note: if a string is sharp, go below the note and come back up. Changes in temperature also move the pitch, so check the tuning each time you play.
Is my audio recorded?
No. Your browser analyzes the sound on your device and then discards it. Nothing is recorded, uploaded or stored, and the microphone turns off when you tap Stop or leave the page. Only your tuning and A4 reference are saved, in this browser. If the tuner hears nothing, check that the browser may use the microphone and that no other app is using it. The privacy policy has the details.
FAQ
What are the notes of a ukulele, in order?
G C E A, from string 4 (nearest your chin) to string 1 (nearest the floor). On a standard uke the G is a high G, G4. To remember it, say Good Cooks Eat Apples, or sing "My Dog Has Fleas" to the four strings.
Can I tune my ukulele with my phone?
Yes. Open this page, tap Start listening and hold the phone about 30 cm from the sound hole. Pluck one string at a time with the others quiet. It works in Safari and Chrome on iPhone and Android, and on a computer with a microphone.
Why does my new ukulele keep going flat?
New nylon or fluorocarbon strings stretch for days. Each time they stretch, the pitch drops. Tune, gently pull each string up from the fretboard, and tune again. After a week of playing they hold.
Can I tune a baritone ukulele here?
Not with string buttons: the tuner has no D G B E ukulele tuning. A baritone is tuned like the four highest guitar strings, so open the guitar tuner, lock strings 4 to 1 (D, G, B and E) and tune to those.
How close is in tune?
The needle turns green within 5 cents of the note, which is closer than most people can hear on a ukulele. A string counts as tuned when it stays green for about a second.
